Biodiversity at SHV: Why it matters and what we’re doing
PlanetWhen you hear Biodiversity, you might think of forests, wildlife or conservation projects, but Biodiversity is about much more than that!
Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, from plants and animals to entire ecosystems. These ecosystems provide things we often take for granted like clean water, fertile soil, pollination, natural resources, and a stable climate. Biodiversity helps keep the world, and our economy, running.
As part of SHV’s Nature theme for 2026, we’re taking a closer look at Biodiversity:
Why does Biodiversity matter to SHV?
Many of SHV’s businesses depend on Nature in one way or another. Whether it’s sourcing raw materials, operating assets, managing supply chains or serving customers, healthy ecosystems support long-term business success.
At the same time, business activities can also have an impact on nature. Understanding both sides of that relationship helps SHV identify risks, opportunities and areas where action may be needed. Biodiversity-related dependencies have already been identified within parts of SHV’s portfolio, particularly in value chains that rely heavily on natural resources. The relevance differs between Groups. For example, Nature dependencies are particularly significant within parts of Nutreco’s animal nutrition and aquaculture value chains, while land use, infrastructure, and upstream supply chains can create different Biodiversity considerations for other SHV Groups.
What is SHV doing about Biodiversity?
Through the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA), SHV and the Groups assess where Biodiversity creates impacts, risks, opportunities, and dependencies. These insights help inform business decisions and, where relevant, form part of SHV’s sustainability reporting under the CSRD. Biodiversity and ecosystems are covered by the ESRS E4 standard. Biodiversity may be complex, but the starting point is simple: understanding where our businesses depend on Nature, where they affect it, and why that matters for future value creation to remain resilient.
